On Tuesday, President Obama met with about 20 Jewish community leaders and stressed that he probably knows more about Judaism than any other president because, Haaretz reported, he read about it.
Not only that, the publication noted that he told “his guests that he had so many Jewish friends in Chicago at the beginning of his political career that he was accused of being a puppet of the Israel lobby.”
This despite the fact that both John Adams and James Madison spoke biblical Hebrew, as well as Latin and Greek.
But the President wasn’t finished. According to a report at Ynet News, Obama blamed Republican bigotry for the perception that he is not friendly to Israel:
Now, he said, the Republicans are trying to portray him as not being supportive of Israel by stressing the fact that his father was Muslim and he has a Muslim name, as well as by claiming that he had been overly aggressive in pushing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to promote the peace process with the Palestinians.
Haaretz added that Obama “wondered how come no one asks Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner or Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell about their support to Israel.”
The Weekly Standard’s William Kristol responded, saying that the “reason no one asks John Boehner or Mitch McConnell about their support for Israel is because they really do support Israel.”
“The reason people ask Barack Obama about his support for Israel is because his support for Israel has been equivocal,” he added.
He also called Obama’s remark about his Jewish friends in Chicago, “truly pathetic,” adding that Obama’s “vanity boggles the mind.”
“Actually, one wishes more of his best friends were pro-Israel Christians. They might have had more luck convincing him, a fellow Christian, that he should be pro-Israel,” he wrote.
“I guess it’s Obama’s great knowledge of Judaism that spurs him to argue Jerusalem’s division is up for negotiation,” tweeted the National Review’s Jim Geraghty.
“The most revealing bit here is his reflexive need to inflate his own reputation at the expense of other presidents,” notes a post at the conservative blog Hot Air.
“He could have said that he’s read widely about Jewish history and culture and left it at that, but this is a guy who’s into measuring himself against his predecessors when he isn’t busy exploiting their glory to tout his own ‘achievements.’” the post added.
“Now seeing and reacting to the Obama administration’s atrocious record as pertains to Israel is bigotry. It seems truth is now a ‘dog whistle’ code word,” a post at Twitchy observed.
