A 52-year-old Acworth man was struck and killed late Friday while he was crossing Highway 92 in Cherokee County. And officials said the pedestrian was jaywalking in a poorly-lit location.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s officials have identified the man as Mr. Herrerra Mendez.
They said he was walking alone when he was hit by a Nissan SUV about 9:30 p.m. just west of Wade Green Road, the sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said.
“A vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 92 struck a Hispanic male who was crossing the highway in a dimly lit area,” Lt. Baker said. “The pedestrian was not utilizing a crosswalk when he was struck by the Nissan SUV.”
Mr. Mendez died at the scene and investigators said it’s unlikely that the SUV’s driver will be charged for hitting him.
“There is no indication the driver was speeding or impaired at the time of the collision,” Lt. Baker said.
