Born September 5, 1951 in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, Michael Keaton is a Pittsburgh native that made it big as an actor in Hollywood. The youngest of seven children his birth name was Michael John Douglas. He decided to change it in order to avoid confusion with the daytime show host Mike Douglas and famous actor Michael Douglas. He once read an article about actress Diane Keaton and then decided “Michael Keaton” would be his acting name.
He attended Montour High School and after graduating studied speech for two years at Kent State in Ohio. Keaton eventually dropped out and moved back to Pittsburgh. He then worked as a TV cameraman at Pittsburgh’s public television station WQED. He even worked as one of the “Flying Zucchini Brothers” for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
His first break came when he had a chance to work with Jim Belushi in the brief comedy series called Working Stiffs. This led to his role in the comedy movie “Night Shift.” Subsequently he starred in box office hits such as “Mr. Mom,” “Johnny Dangerously” and “Gung Ho.”
In 1988 he got the title role in the movie Beetlejuice. His success in that movie put him on Hollywood’s A-list. This was the same year he gave an impressive dramatic performance in the movie “Clean and Sober.”
Michael Keaton is probably best remembered for playing the role of Batman in the 1989 movie directed by Hollywood icon Tim Burton. Keaton also starred in the second movie called “Batman Returns.” When Tim Burton was dropped from directing the third Batman movie, Keaton was no longer involved with the series.
As a dedicated Pittsburgh Pirate fan he actually negotiated a possible break in the making of the first Batman movie should the Pirates have made it into the playoffs that year.
Since 2000 Michael Keaton has starred in a variety of movies including “Live from Baghdad,” which Keaton was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. He provided the voice of Chick Hicks in the movie “Cars” and the voice of Ken in “Toy Story III.” He has also hosted a PBS TV special honoring Mister Rogers called, “Mr. Rogers: America’s Favorite Neighborhood.”
As a dedicated fisherman Keaton can be seen on the saltwater fishing program called “Buccaneers & Bones” featured on the Outdoor Channel.
Michael Keaton and actress Caroline McWilliams were married from 1982 to 1990 and have a son named Sean Maxwell who was born on May 27, 1983.
