Your dog is a member of your family and a huge part of your life. If you are like me, you cannot imagine going a day with your pet – after all, who else is so excited to see you when you return than your dog(s)? It doesn’t even matter how long you’ve been gone. The last thing you would want is to have your dog go missing. Because your dog is just like another child in your home, you have to be cautious so it cannot get out and run off, placing it in danger. The friendly staff at your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below (or one closest to your home) can help you with special tips on protecting and keeping your dog safe at home.
You must be aware of your dog’s presence at all times. The dog does not know the dangers that exist if it gets lost and relies on you for its protection. Don’t leave doors open where the dog can escape and be sure all windows are secure as well as safeguarding doggy doors or cat flaps.
It is sometimes difficult to prevent accidents – the kids keep going in and out and the dog follows, just to name one instance. Be sure your dog is kept up-to-date on all records and shots as well as keeping identification on your pet at all times. It can be a matter of getting your dog returned to you or not. You can choose to have appropriate tags on your dog’s collar although a microchip is a safest, secure identification in locating your pet. A microchip can never be lost or removed.
If your dog does get lost, there are several steps you can take for a happy reunion. Organize a search party as soon as you realize the dog is gone. Most pets do not go far from home and several people searching at least a three block radius can have better results. On top of that, be sure to put up flyers everywhere possible with the dogs photo, name, your phone number and email address.
Spread the word to all friends, family and acquaintances regarding your lost dog. Use social media such as Face Book, Twitter, local Craigslist or any other source that reaches a huge number of people. The more you can spread the word, the better chance you will have in locating a lost pet.
Sometimes you can make a report with local shelters in case your dog is brought in. You certainly don’t want to find out that they had your dog and it was adopted out. File a lost pet report with them as soon as you can.
Don’t ever give up looking for your lost dog – your dearest canine family member. When it is either returned or miraculously comes back home – which does happen all the time, be sure to take every extra precaution to be sure your pet remains in the safety and security of your own home and yard.
