In response to what has happened in North Carolina with the essential banning of gay marriage through a constitutional amendment, it seems safe to say that to most progressives this should have been totally expected, and it’s not over yet—not by a long shot! This is only the beginning of how the conservative empire is preparing to stirke back.
Even during an era filled with terms like “jobs, jobs, jobs” and “It’s the economy stupid,” it’s the social engineering of the followers of the only-America-loving God that has taken center stage once again. And with that being said, it might be the economy stupid, but you’ll be the one left for stupid if you believe that it’s only about the economy!
People of the closed minded persuasion fear diversity for one simple, primitive reason. They cannot ideologically dictate the narrative. Diversity is freedom on so many levels, and the only way to make people do what you want them to do is through the systematic dismantling of the options of that freedom.
People can try to disguise it as God’s will, preserving the family unit, saving the children, ‘American Exceptionalism,’ or national security, while carpetbagging, theologians like Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council even went so far as to espouse to CNN’s Piers Morgan that heterosexuality is good for the economy, because the traditional family unit of a man and a woman makes society more productive as a whole. But in the end, it’s just religious bigotry dressed up in genuinely concerned clothing.
When Morgan asked Perkins what he would do if one of his children came home one day and proclaimed to be gay, Perkins did just like he always does, just like the voters of North Carolina did, he wasted no time in resorting to his big, conservative, religious stick that he had loaned out to former presidential nominee Rick Santorum during his failed bid for the GOP nomination.
Perkins looked into the camera in front of a worldwide audience and unashamedly said that his children would not come home and make such a proclamation in the first place, because his children were raised right, and he saw to that personally. Perkins believes that his offspring have been raised in the correct environment that’s needed to produce the correct, desired, Christian-friendly result, as he so plainly stated to Morgan and to the world.
And how is this for irony? Perkins’ anti-gay blueprint on child rearing almost echoes verbatim the sentiments of North Carolina’s Rev. Sean Harris, who is the pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville. Harris is the insensitive glory-hound who passes himself off as some kind of holy man on one hand, while endorsing physical violence against children on the other hand during his famed sermon where he deliberately instructed the parents of children who exert gay behavior or gay tendencies to “crack that wrist” when it goes limp, and “give him a good punch.” Harris also directed his flock to “rein in” any girls that are “too butch” in their behavior.
Harris’ ideology and Perkins’ ideology are like two peas in a pod. Perkins says that his blueprint will prevent homosexuality, while Harris has gone the extra mile and given a sermon that should have been called ‘How not to raise homosexual kids for dummies.’ Harris spells it out, Perkins gets his family in line, and now the nice voters of North Carolina have made that all important, heterosexual environment official.
So if Harris, Perkins and the voters of North Carolina are all correct in their assessments, their newly formed, gay-free, environment of righteousness should produce the first gay-free state in the country, even if it takes a litany of cracked wrists and punched out kids all throughout the state to do it. But honestly, does one really have any room to ridicule someone else’s dogma when their only method of recruitment is cracking wrists and gut punches—not in my book! So thankfully I don’t have to read in North Carolina.
And to all of the progressives and Democrats who believe that President Obama is going to walk away with North Carolina in the electoral, win column as easily as Justin Bieber is likely to get punched out and have his wrists cracked as soon as he steps across the state line into North Carolina, let this be a wake up call to the disgruntled, the disenfranchised, and the disinterested! Complain with your vote, not your apathy.
