A rematch between former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin and former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva is set to take place as the main event at UFC 147. The fight will take place at a catchweight of 190 pounds.
UFC officials broke the news this afternoon.
UFC 147 is expected to take place on June 23 at the Mineirinho Gymnasium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The main card will air live on pay-per-view.
Silva was expected to fight Vitor Belfort in the main event but after Belfort broke his hand, Franklin accepted the fight on short notice.
In their first fight, the Cincinnati native defeated Silva by unanimous decision in June 2009. The bout served as the main event for UFC 99.
Franklin (28-6) will be looking for his first win since knocking out Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 in 2010. Franklin is coming off an unanimous decision loss in to Forrest Griffin at UFC 126.
Franklin has been sidelined for the past 16 months due to a shoulder injury. “Ace” was expected to make his return at UFC 148 against Cung Lee.
Silva (34-11) is coming off a stint as a coach on the Brazilian edition of the “Ultimate Fighter.”
Since coming back to the UFC in 2007, Silva has had an up and down career. “The Axe Murder” has lost four of his seven fights and has been knocked out in two of those losses.
UFC 147 will also serve as the finals of the Brazilian edition of the “Ultimate Fighter.” A new featherweight and middleweight champion will be crowned. Also on the card, Mike Russow will take on Fabricio Werdum.
