Ruslan Provodnikov walked through Jose Reynoso in the main event of the Thompson Boxing main event televised on the ESPN “Friday Night Fights” event from Corona, CA.
Provodnikov walked through Reynoso’s punches in the second round and landed a series of power punches – including three rights, the third of which snapped Reynoso’s head back and put him on the canvas.
Reynoso made it to his feet but was groggy and the fight was waved off at the 1:52 mark.
It was the fifth straight win for Provodnikov (22-1, 15 KOs) , whose only defeat was a 12-round defeat to Maurico Herrera in a bid to win the vacant International Boxing Federation light welterweight title in early 2011.
In his last bout Provodnikov won the vacant World Boxing Organization Inter-Continental light weighterweight title with a sixth round stoppage of David Torres.
Reynoso (16-3-1) was looking to win for the seventh straight time.
Here is a look at the undercard bouts:
MARTIN STOPS CASTENADA
Junior featherweight Christopher Martin floored Roberto Castenada in the fifth and sixth rounds, forcing a stoppage at the 2:31 mark of the sixth.
Martin, who floored Castaneda with a right hook to the body in the fifth, tagged Castenada with a left hook to the body for the sixth round knockdown.
Castenada made the count but was done and the ref waved the fight off.
Martin improved to 24-2-3 with his 7th KO victory. Castenada dropped to 19-2-1.
ACEVEDO & MARTINEZ FIGHT TO DRAW
Daniel Martinez, in his pro debut, and Aaron Acevedo, in just his second fight as a pro, fought their hearts out in a four round super featherweight bout.
Martinez looked to have a slight edge going into the final round but Martinez finished strong, landing some heavy shots in the fourth that may have swayed the judges.
Martinez was the faster of the two but couldn’t keep the bullish Acevedo off of him.
Martinez (0-0-1) won the fight on one scorecard (39-37) with the fight declared a draw with two scorecards of 38-38. Acevedo dropped to 1-1.
GODOY DECISIONS CRESPO
Oscar Godoy outworked Roberto Crespo in a four round welterweight bout.
Godoy (6-2) won with two scorecards of 40-36 and one scorecard of 39-37.
Crespo dropped to 4-2.
MEDEL DECISIONS ANDERSON
In a quality female bout, Lizette Medel rallied in the last three rounds to take a unaminous decision over hard punching Tatiana Anderson.
Medel (7-1-1) scored big points midway through the fourth when she caught Anderson on the ropes, landing the biggest punches of the bout – highlighted by a pair of tough left hooks to Anderson’s head.
OSUNA DECISIONS JOHNSON
The opening bout on Friday’s Thompson Boxing card in Corona was supposed to be a tough one for Coachella’s Angel Osuna.
The super welterweight, who trains at the Coachella Boxing Club just east of Palm Springs, was pitted against difficult Dashon Johnson.
Johnson showed up but didn’t put up much of an effort, which was more than enough for Osuna to pick up a six round unanaminous decision. Osuna won with three scorecards of 60-54.
It wasn’t a bright display for Osuna, who lacked his usual aggression and seem to grow weary at the midway point.
Osuna improved to 8-3-1. Johnson dropped to 13-6-3.
