Russia and the USA have locked horns about Syria with both sides arming the Syrian factions: government and rebels. Russia is dependent upon Syrian oil and arms sales too. For the USA, Syria is another Middle East thorn in the side that is also aligned with Iran, a most irritating thorn.
Mr. Positive, Kofi Annan, envoy for the UN and Arab League believes that a suitable outcome is within sight.
Apparently, the “sticking” point is what to do with President Bashar al-Assad. It doesn’t seem right that Russia and the USA would be deciding that out of context of all the other players, does it?
Bashar al-Assad’s actions against humanity make him global public enemy #1. Outside of Iran, where is he to go where people can’t touch him? Let’s see, Pakistan and Lebanon are possibilities. Of course, some party will get to him in Lebanon. Drones may get him in Pakistan, eventually. He had better opt for Iran or, hey, what about Russia?
The Guardian has done some great reporting here. Consider the facts as they have seen them first hand.
“”Is this the Russians reneging on something they have already agreed to or just improving their negotiating position?” asked one official. “It’s not entirely clear.”
Syrian opposition groups insist there can be no agreement on transition without Assad surrendering power and leaving the country.
According to the document, seen by the Guardian, the establishment of a transitional government would be followed by a national dialogue and a review of Syria’s constitutional order and the legal system. Next would come “free and fair multi-party elections for the new institutions and offices that have been established”.
It also urges a “cessation of armed violence in all its forms and immediate, credible and visible actions to implement items two to six of Annan’s six-point plan”.”
On what do the parties agree?
Apparently they don’t agree that Bashar al-Assad must step down. Therefore, there isn’t anything to agree with.
In the end, the USA and allies want Assad held accountable for his alleged crimes. In all of this discussion, should that not ultimately be left up to the Syrian people. Maybe we could keep him in a holding cell at Gitmo until things calm down.
“Syria crisis: Russia and US disagree over political exit ahead of Geneva talks
Kofi Annan predicts ‘appropriate outcome’ for weekend talks, but difficulties remain over possible departure of Bashar al-Assad
Russia and the US remained locked in negotiation on Friday over proposals for a political exit to the Syrian crisis as violence and protests raged across the country on the eve of a key international conference.
Kofi Annan, envoy for the UN and Arab League, predicted an “appropriate outcome” for Saturday’s talks in Geneva. But disagreements between Moscow and the west over the possible departure of President Bashar al-Assad and continuing carnage on the ground underlined how hard it will be to make progress.
