A report from The Daily Mail told the story of an emaciated dog, found by the side of the road in a cardboard box in Somerset, England. She only weighed a little over 17 pounds, which is half what a dog of her breed should weigh. Now the RSPCA is asking that anyone with information about who might have starved this precious girl to come forward, so the perpetrators can be brought to justice.
The dog, now named Hope, is a Staffordshire Terrier cross. The normal weight for that breed would be twice the 17 pounds this starving girl weighed. She was turned into the RSPCA located in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset. The man who turned her in refused to give his name. All he told the staff was that he had found her in a cardboard box on the side of the road, near a burger van on A370 near Hewish, Somerset on May 16, 2012.
The staff at the RSPCA stated they had never seen a dog still alive who was so very thin. Clearly this was not something that happened overnight, and it appears someone intentionally starved poor Hope.
They were worried that she would not survive her first night, because she was too weak to eat or drink anything, and could not maintain her body temperature. To combat this, they had to literally wrap her up in blankets and bubble wrap, and run warm intravenous fluids. She was so weak; she could not even stand up on her own.
The dedicated staff at the RSPCA brought her back from the brink, and there is cautious optimism that Hope will now survive. She is able to stand for short periods on her own now, which will help her to rebuild the muscles in her emaciated little body. But, she still has a long way to go.
Under the United Kingdom’s Animal Welfare Act 2006, anyone convicted of causing the unnecessary suffering of an animal could face penalties of up to 6 months in jail, and a fine of up to £20,000 (approximately $31,183).
The RSCPA is asking that anyone with any information at all about who starved Hope, and then threw her away like garbage, to please contact them with the information. You can access the website for reporting the information here or at the link provided at the end of the article.
Hope is a gorgeous girl, and surely someone has information about who the people are who should have been her guardians, but instead chose to starve her, and then throw her away on the side of the road. Please circulate this story to all of your contacts in the United Kingdom, so that Hope’s story is made known, and hopefully the monsters who harmed her can be found and brought to justice.
Thankfully, Hope was found and rescued before it was too late. Once she has recovered enough, she will be transferred to another RSPCA facility, and be placed up for adoption into a new loving forever home.
Keep fighting to get stronger, sweet Hope. Advocates will do all they can to find those who harmed you, and see that they face the maximum possible penalties under the law for the suffering you have endured.
