As the Olympic flame makes its way toward London, let the Sewickley Valley YMCA Senior Games 2012, inspire you, Pittsburgh seniors, to sign up. It’s not too late.
Karen Hallisey, CEO, stated registration is still open. The event is free, and includes lunch on the closing day. You do NOT have to be a Y member. The games run five days – May 12 through May 16.
According to Hallisey, “The games evolved from the fact that our Y is seeing a greater increase in our senior membership. We’re hoping to get over 100 participants in this first-year effort. “
Seniors are heading to the gym – and even the Wii – in record numbers. Perhaps because their numbers are ever increasing.
The National Institute on Senior Health recommends seniors be active as long as possible. “Being physically active can also help you stay strong and fit enough to keep doing the things you like to do as you get older. Making exercise and physical activity a regular part of your life can improve your health and help you maintain your independence as you age.”
Sewickley Valley YMCA offers three exercise levels for its games: fit to sedentary:
- Workout Warrior 2: Exercisers who work out moderately 2-5 times per week
- Workout Warrior 3: Exercisers with less than 2 workouts per week
The Bike Blast, Treadmill Run, Lap Lovers (swimming), and Weight Lift Masters will be adjusted according to your level.
And don‘t miss these events: Free Throw Contest, Billiards, Wii Bowling Tournament, Garbage Can Golf, Corn Hole Contest, and Bingo
Wednesday, May 16, is the last day of the games. It will include a free lunch sponsored by Heritage Valley Health System, and provided by The Cooked Goose Catering.
There will also be an awards ceremony, awarding gold, silver and bronze prizes, and a Chinese Auction.
The other sponsors of this event include Health America Advantra, Greater Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Associates, and Leetsdale VFW, who is donating the water bottles to participants.
Sign up for all events at the Registration Desk at the Y, or by phone at 412-741-9622 X 121.
