Writing on his Twitter account Tuesday, Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor confirmed that the band is currently working on demos for an upcoming album, writing
To anyone asking, Slipknot is not currently working on an album. Yet. We are putting together demos, but we’re not recording. Yet.”
Confirmation of a new Slipknot album came from DJ Sid Wilson, who told NME at the beginning of the month that the band plans to enter the studio at the beginning of 2013, after Taylor’s side project, Stone Sour, has finished touring.
Regarding the theme of the album, the members of the band have said that it will focus on the feelings resulting from the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010. Percussionist Shawn Crahan told Billboard in November that it would be reminiscent of the band’s second studio album, Iowa, which was “a very dark, painful time” for the band members, adding:
What’s next is a lot of what ‘Iowa was,’ but different. ‘Iowa’ was very angry and very hateful and very evil, and…this is my opinion only, but I think (the next album) is going to be very sad. It will have that layer of anger and hate and evil that will come with being just so sad, but… I think a really, really, really special change in our career is coming. I don’t think it’s going to be better, and I don’t think it’s going to be worse. I just think it’s going to be different. I think that’s what we want, and I know that’s what Paul would want.
Taylor agreed with this sentiment, commenting:
we know that everything we do on that album is going to be about Paul. It’s going to be very melancholy. It’s going to be a more saddened form of rage when it does happen, and it’ll be a whole path that we’ve never gone down before.”
Due to Gray’s death, Taylor has been reluctant to begin work on a new Slipknot album, telling The Gauntlet:
There are a lot of things in the band that have to change before we can go in and make an album. There are a lot of things we have to figure out and make peace with. We already know what the album is going to be about, we just need to find the strength to do it the right way.”
Slipknot will be releasing a greatest-hits compilation on July 17 titled Antennas to Hell via Roadrunner Records. In anticipation of the compilation, the band will be releasing teaser clips featuring each member. The first, focusing on Wilson, can be viewed here.
The band will also be headlining this summer’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, beginning on June 30. The festival will be in two locations near Springfield: Oklahoma City at the Zoo Amphitheatre on July 18 and Maryland Heights at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on July 20. Other bands playing on the tour include Slayer, Anthrax, Motorhead, As I Lay Dying and more. More information can be found at the Festival’s official web site.
