On Friday, May 11th Spectra Records is having a talent search showcase at Club 57 West that will feature performances from several local Orlando bands. There are 11 bands scheduled for the night full of music, and a chance at a recording contract.
The local Orlando bands scheduled to play are Petey and the Ravens, Joseph Allen White, At Ends Meet, Janani, Styles of Saturn, The Jabronis, and A Chance of Fireballs. They will be joined by GS Teazer, Rising Down, The Ground Is Dancing, and Sleepsoil in competition for the ultimate prize.
“We are looking forward to this showcase,” said Pedro “Petey” Rodriguez, of local Orlando band Petey and the Ravens. “Winning this showcase will mean recognition for all of our hard work to develop our style. People sometimes can’t pinpoint our style. We try to not sound like anyone else without loosing our roots that is Rock and Blues influence. I have been compared to Santana, Robin Thrower and other guitar players; in the end my pursuit is to be me. The band supports my striving to find that sound and without them, there would be no Petey and the Ravens.”
Local Orlando singer/songwriter Joseph Allen White is also looking forward to the showcase, “I look forward to any chance I have to play my own songs for a new audience. Typically, when I play gigs around town, I’m playing mostly cover songs and its pretty much background music. So I really appreciate these types of opportunities.”
The scheduled bands span many different musical genres from Country flavored Rock music to Punk. “Being a different genre of music does not make it any easier to stand out,” said Rodriguez. “We are very bluesy at times and love to jam, I also like to rock from time to time. Today’s music is very different, but the good news is that there are other bands like ours brewing their own style of music in Orlando and this new generation of musicians are choosing a path similar to ours. Who knows what we will see in the future come out of Orlando.”
Joseph Allen White is looking forward to the exposure to a mixed crowd. “My bottom line is that I write songs because I love to write songs, but I also want them to be heard. What’s the point in painting a masterpiece if you’re just going to keep it in your basement? I’m not saying any of my songs are masterpieces, but you get my point. I didn’t write them and have them produced, so that I could jam out to them in my own car. So any opportunity to gain a wider audience is an opportunity that I would never pass up.”
Tickets for this showcase event are $10 and are available in advance. The show is slated to start at 8 p.m. Club 57 West is located at 57 West Pine Street in downtown Orlando.
Music fans can make the local Orlando bands look really good by showing up and rooting them on to a win.
