Whether you love the guy or hate the guy….you WILL always tune in to see what Chael Sonnen does or says next. Chael Sonnen is West Linn Oregon’s self-proclaimed original “American Gangster”. He has single-handedly changed the meaning of “fighter/promoter” and has taken himself from the brink of irrelevance to MMA’s best “must tune in” character.
Chael’s persona is something that was created and not something he was born with. In wrestling circles, you are not bigger than the sport or your team…ever. Most wrestlers are the quiet and focused type with a work ethic that would make the starving men of the Great Depression proud. However, Chael Sonnen has been able to parlay his all-world wrestling background and skills into a million dollar bank account as well as comedic sports genius.
If you think that his only substance is his mouthy talk…..then you are very sorely mistaken. Chael administered the most one sided beating of Champion Anderson Silva’s career, and showed other middleweights in the UFC that when the “American Gangster” rolls into town….you better be on your best behavior. Sonnen put it on the champion from the opening bell and was 30 seconds away from “officially” walking out of the cage with the belt and enough “I told you so’s” to last a lifetime.
Now that the rematch is finally upon us on July 7th, will we see the same dominant performance that we saw back in August of 2010….or will the UFC’s most dominant Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva come out like he promises to…..“guns-a-blazing” and out to break the American Gangster’s bones.
Fight fans around the globe can clearly see why this rematch will be such an interesting and intriguing fight. These two have such a nasty history between them that you can bet “ole Chael” is chomping at the bit to give “The Spider” another lopsided beating in the world’s fight capital, Las Vegas.
The Brazilian’s sense of national pride is something that is truly amazing and evokes the strongest of visceral emotions for the MMA fans of Brazil. Their champion is the world’s champion and the Brazilians could not be more proud and would love to see the utter demolition of Brazil’s public enemy number 1, Chael Sonnen.
If you think that fighting Anderson Silva is crazy enough as is…..imagine this; the “American Gangster” offered to stroll right into Brazil and take the rematch in the champion’s hometown of Rio de Janeiro. At first glance, the UFC was jumping for joy when they began to predict the kind of viewership numbers that strategy had in store, but when Dana White and the boys came to Brazil to deliver a press conference about the rematch, the UFC decided that the security risk to Chael was too great a risk….and therefore moved the fight to Vegas.
Fight fans…we often talk about making sure to notify our devoted fans to not miss certain fights, but Examiner cannot stress enough about NOT MISSING the most anticipated fight in UFC history….Silva vs Sonnen II will provide the kind of anticipation, hype, combatants and storylines to make history.
