Last week I was fortunate enough to receive a press pass to attend the biggest pro only even in the United States: The Makeup Show. Last year was my first time attending a trade show and I wasn’t sure what to expect – especially when it comes to crowd.
This time around, I was fully prepared. I browsed each website of the vendors that were attending so I can do some research on the company and the types of products they sell. I did this so I can create a strict list and budget – which of course I broke within two hours – of the items I was most interested in. I always recommend creating lists because you don’t want to forget anything. You won’t see deals like these online or in store!
Some new and familiar faces visit Chicago
I was please to see some returning favorites and a few new faces. The newcomer to the makeup trade show world was popular cosmetic company – and one of my personal favorites – NARS Cosmetics. This was their first year appearing at the Makeup Show and the company’s first time in Chicago (We love you too NARS!), where they were offering an amazing 30 percent discount on all of the items they brought to the show. Return was MAC Cosmetics who did things a little different this year and offered the pros the usually 40 percent off and everyone else received 20 percent off. This is a major deal since MAC ONLY offers discounts to professional who own a pro card. Also returning were Make Up For Ever, Alcone, Stila Cosmetics, and much more!
The Makeup Show is an amazing place where you can network with cosmetic companies, meet industry professionals, and people who share a common interest with you: makeup! As someone who normally reserved and quiet when it comes to large crowds, it was nice chatting with some of the nicest people, getting tips, and recommendations on great products that I wasn’t previous familiar with. You can’t experience this anywhere else! You also get the opportunity to sit in on a variety of keynotes where you can learn tips, tricks, and important information to improve your skills as a makeup artist.
I attended the show on Sunday where there wasn’t a moment to sit. Between walking the booths, meeting owners of various cosmetic companies and sitting in on keynotes like the beauty and the blogger, my schedule was jammed packed. The Beauty and the Blogger keynote ran long and I had to leave to attend another keynote, but I was a little disappointed. They had three extremely talented women talk about how they got started in blogging, which took up an entire hour so I wasn’t able to really learn anything about how to make it as a blogger. I enjoyed hearing how they got their start, but I was more interested in tips and tricks to start and running your own blog or website. I’m really hoping they do this keynote next year with a few minor tweaks.
Overall thoughts on the Makeup Show Chicago
Overall, I had such an amazing time this year. It’s only been a week and I’m already counting down the days until next year. I’ve also been toying with the idea of attending The Makeup Show in New York… I loved it THAT much! If you’re a professional looking to stock up or get starting on your makeup kit, I highly recommend attending the Makeup Show. These deals are amazing and they don’t get much better than this – not even at IMATS.
If you attended The Makeup Show in any of the cities or are thinking about attending, leave me a comment below! I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on the event.
Until then… see you next year for the Makeup Show Chicago 2013!
