Opimian Select Cellar Offering 203 comes from Chateau Canet, who have 45 hectares of vineyards and 3 hectares of olive groves in the far south of France. Located only 15 minutes from two UNESCO world heritage sites, Cité de Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi, Chateau Canet is just two kilometres from the village of Rustiques, at the heart of Languedoc Rousillon.
This traditional 19th century wine estate is run by Victoria and Floris Menstra, who have carefully restored the original buildings. The manor house is still a family home and the original “vignerons” lodgings have been converted to guest cottages.
The vineyards are managed sustainably, with over half planted to Syrah, and 4.5 hectares of those with more mineral soils planted with Chardonnay. This explains why our Select case contains two bottles each of Canet Chardonnay, Syrah Rosé and Syrah – fantastic value at only $83 for all six bottles and $19 less than in any other province in the country!
Domaine Canet Chardonnay, IGP Pays D’Oc ~ #6142
Canet Chardonnay is an elegant wine with a lovely warm, golden brass colour. There are aromas of subdued citrus backed by more tropical notes of banana, pineapple, coconut and a hint of sage, all echoed on the palate. It manages to be fresh, yet mellow at the same time. The wine is nicely balanced between the fruit, oak and acidity, with a long toasty finish.
Take this Chardonnay out of the fridge twenty minutes before drinking, to warm up just slightly and allow the aromas to express themselves fully. It would be perfect with chicken or turkey stuffed with sage dressing, roasted garlic hummus, cheese plates and salads with roasted pine nuts, and creamy coconut curries. 9/9
Domaine Canet Syrah Rosé, IGP Pays D’Oc ~ #6143
This wine is a very pretty, alder-smoked salmon colour, reminiscent of the colour of a bridesmaid’s dress. The grapes for are picked early and then left intact in the press for a few hours before pressing to give the juice a fruity structure and provide the delicate colour. There are aromas of light raspberry and strawberry with just a slight suggestion of rosemary, leading to a surprisingly dry and refreshing palate, with a good acidity.
There’s no need to wait for dinner to sip this wine. It’s summery and can be enjoyed for celebratory breakfasts and with al fresco lunches of quiche, omelettes and frittatas, spinach salad, fresh seared tuna fish salad, shrimp and other light seafood dishes. 10/10
Domaine Canet Syrah, IGP Pays D’Oc ~ #6144
Canet Syrah is made from 100% Syrah that comes from the younger vineyards of the Domaine. It has been vinified to extract maximum fruitiness with very soft tannins for easy drinking. The wine has had no contact with oak to keep the flavour fresh and juicy, and it was bottled early to maintain the depth of aromas. The initial scents are rosemary, clove and a hint of marshmallow, which give way to soft, dark berries. On the palate, the wine has a smokiness to add to its medium-body and velvety mouth-feel.
Pork tenderloin would be a delicious match, as well as chicken breast stuffed with ham and cheese, braised hearts of celery or fennel, course herb paté and bacon-wrapped sausages or dates. 9/
