The 2012 American Humane Association “Hero Dog Awards” nominations are coming to close today, and our very own New Jersey rescue, Daniel the Miracle Beagle, is one of the contestants in the “Emerging Hero Dog” category. You have until midnight tonight to vote for Daniel, and your support is needed.
The American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards™ were created in 2010 to celebrate the powerful relationships between dogs and people. The intention of the awards is that they will serve as a catalyst to advance society’s understanding of the human-animal bond.
As noted, dogs are an invaluable part of our lives. They serve as companion animals, service and therapy animals, animal soldiers, police officers and first responders. They absolutely are “emerging heroes.” The American Humane Association advocates for the American values of caring, compassion and hope with regard to our animal friends.
The first annual awards show was held in October 2011. It was hosted at the Beverly Hilton Hotel by Carson Kressley. This was and continues to be an ambitious effort to recognize “ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things.”
New Jersey’s Daniel is absolutely an extraordinary dog. He survived the Alabama gas chamber in October, 2011 while eighteen other dogs perished, as no one came forward to give them a forever home.
Thanks to the animal control officer willing to give Daniel his second chance, as the story goes, eventually the Eleventh Hour Rescue group brought Daniel to New Jersey where the Dwyer Family of Nutley adopted him into their loving home.
Daniel now stands testament to the cruelty of the use of gas chambers for mass destruction of animal lives due to no fault of their own. Many in the general public still do not realize that such organized killing occurs. Each year, millions of animals are euthanized through this brutal process.
Daniel’s amazing story has made him a hero dog to thousands of his other canine friends. He has become an advocate for anti-gassing laws in various state legislatures. For example, “Daniel’s Law” to outlaw the use of the gas chambers in Pennsylvania advanced to the Senate in December of 2011 and is one example where history is being made.
Daniel has become quite the celebrity with appearances on local, national, and worldwide news outlets. Such renown has brought Daniel the opportunity to also advocate for shelter adoptions across the country and create a positive impact on the lives of homeless pets.
“Daniel is an awesome member of this family, as that will always be our top priority,” said Joe Dwyer, Daniel’s owner. “But we will also be pursuing his incredible causes to help animals in need and ultimately create a more compassionate world for animals and people.”
Vote now for Daniel, the Miracle Beagle as Emerging Hero Dog.
Remember, you have until midnight tonight, June 30, to cast your vote.
