Michael Stone, The National Humanist Examiner, offered a recent article entitled, “Creationism harms America: Religion breeds ignorance.” The Oklahoma City Biblical Examiner, in a series of articles, will respond to the claims and accusations Mr. Stone aimed at believers everywhere. The format will be a statement of Mr. Stone’s followed by a response.
Humanist Examiner: “Biblical creationism in America is an embarrassment and a shame. Biblical creationism is a religious superstition that does real harm to America; it is a symptom of a willful ignorance and an anti-intellectualism that thwarts scientific progress at home and humiliates America abroad.”
Response: The opinions expressed in Mr. Stone’s article come from a worldview that has rejected the idea of God presuppositionally. In other words, the idea of creation, and God, has been determined to be a false concept prior to any investigation.
Additionally, the technique he employs of labeling something as “an embarrassment” and a “shame” is a childish attempt to manipulate people’s emotions. It is an attempt to make people believe, without facts or even contrary to facts, that something is stupid, so they will be less likely to seriously evaluate the issue. They will likely gravitate to the side which is presented as being more intelligent, whether it really is or not. This approach appeals to one’s vanity rather than their rational senses. Pride is a powerful motivator. In this type of argument the facts matter little, the object is simply to win at all cost.
Nevertheless, truth is not decided by popular vote. Truth is truth whether or not anyone believes it. Simply having more numbers on the side of falsehood does not change the falsehood into truth. Majority rule does not decide truth.
Concerning the issue of creation, the Bible is perfectly clear, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1 ESV; see also Job 38:4-7; Psalm 33:6; Psalm 136:5; Isaiah 42:5; Isaiah 45:18; John 1:1-3; Acts 14:15; Acts 17:24; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:10; Hebrews 11:3; Revelation 4:11). Nowhere in the Bible is there any hint of an alternative to the Creation account.
The Bible claims to be the truth (Psalm 119:160; John 17:17) and has repeatedly proven itself to be true. Not only do we have evidence from prophecy, archaeology, and history. In addition, the truth contained in the Bible best fits with the world we see around us, the world that is revealed through scientific investigation.
The truth of God’s Word answers life’s questions better than the theory of evolution. While humanity can see only a very small portion of our universe, the author of the Bible sees it all.
