Rick Collup’s Ultimate Reno Combat 34 took place on Friday, June 29. These 11 MMA fights at the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino were won by Erik Sanchez, Eddie Blakenly, Isaiah Wright, Travis Morley, Jose Quintero, Danny Ramirez, Chad Steiner, Kyle Burks, Chris Reynolds, Giovaughn “Gio” Mackey and Ricky Steele.
The MMA fights were preceded by an Under-18 Pankration event. These Fights use modified MMA rules and rounds run 2 minutes instead of the usual 3. The first match was won by Jared Bontempo of the Reno Academy of Combat over Justin Bachmann. Bontempo’s victory came at 1:08 in the first round by way of Guillotine choke. The second match was won by Peter Nila, also of the Reno Academy of Combat. Nila’s fight went all three rounds and his victory came by way of majority decision.
Valadez vs. Sanchez
Erik Sanchez of Team Alpha Male was like a juggernaut who just kept going after Hugo Valadez representing Team Sharp Nux. Both fighters displayed excellent stand-up and kickboxing skills, however the bout went to the judges who handed a Unanimous Decision to Sanchez, with all 3 judges voting 30-27 in his favor.
Viverus vs. Blakenly
Up next was a debut match for both fighters as George Viverus from the Reno Academy of Combat took on Eddy Blakenly representing Nor Cal MMA in a Light Heavyweight match. almost immediately, Viverus hit Blakenly so hard that he knocked out Blakenly’s mouthpiece. Blakenly came back with a vengeance demonstrating fantastic jiujitsu which made for a very thrilling first round.
In the second round Blakenly secured a mount and launched a ground and pound, winning by TKO at 2:34.
Wright vs. Gunter
In a 125 lbs fight, Isaiah Wright (1-0) of Sektion 8 Fight Team took on Larry Gunter (0-2) of Havok Skwod. The two exchanged punches and went to the ground early in the first round. The second round began in a similar fashion. In the final minute of the second round, Wright blasted Gunter with a one-two combination followed by a devastating uppercut, which dropped Gunter to the canvas. Wright was awarded the Knockout of the Night award for his KO victory at 2:06.
Morley vs. Thomas
Travis Morley of the Mountain Warrior Fight Club, in his MMA debut, defeated Brandon Thomas of Team Sharp Nux by TKO at 1:13 in the first round.
Brock Peterson vs. Quintero
Jose Quintero (0-2) representing Nor Cal MMA earned his first victory by defeating Brock Peterson of Peterson Athletic Systems. Both fighters demonstrated some amazing jiujitsu skills, with Peterson dominating the first round. Quintero made a nice comeback in the second and in the third round he took Peterson down early and submitted him by rear-naked choke in 54 seconds. This earned Quintero the “Submission of the Night Award”.
Perez vs. Ramirez
In a debut bout for both fighters, which was sponsored by US Firearms Academy, Danny Ramirez of the Mountain Warrior Fight Club defeated Sal Perez of the Reno Academy of Combat by knockout in the first 10 seconds of the first round.
Steiner vs. Medina
Chad Steiner (0-1) of Team Sharp Nux squared off against Jose Medina of South Lake Tahoe Wing Chun Round one started out with Medina throwing a high kick completely over Steiner. Steiner shot in for and secured a take-down. Medina worked out of it, only to have Steiner take his back. In the final seconds of the round, Medina sank in a choke, but to no avail.
The second round went back and forth with Steiner being the more aggressive fighter. In the third round, both fighters thrilled the audience with Steiner throwing a perfectly timed spinning back fist and Medina launching a few impressive flying knees. The fight went to the judges, with Steiner winning all 3 rounds by Unanimous Decision.
Burks vs. Sallee
Kyle Burks (1-0) of Team Voodoo defeated David Sallee (1-0) of Havok Skwod by TKO at 2:47 in the first round. This match won fight of the night.
Saucedo vs. Reynolds
Reynolds threw a powerful hay-maker which he used as a take-down against Saucedo. Once down, Reynolds transitioned to guillotine and forced Saucedo to tap out in 16 seconds.
Mackey vs. Delgado
Giovaughn “Gio” Mackey (1-1) of the Reno Academy of Combat defeated Franky Delgado (0-2) from Mountain Warrior Fight Club. Mackey rocked Delgado and followed up with an amazing body slam as a takedown. With Delgado on the ground, Mackey rained down bombs on him and won by TKO at 1:14 in the first round.
Crowell vs. Steele
In the Main Event Ricky Steele (2-0) of Twisted Genetics defeated Mike Crowell (3-2) of Team Voodoo at 1:37 in the first round by way of guillotine choke.
Ultimate Reno Combat 35 will return to the Grand Sierra on Friday, July 20, 2012.
