In Utah we have some great business that prepares gluten free food. We will be highlighting several of these companies. The Agriculture Department of Utah has a great program called Utah’s Own. There are many gluten free companies in this program.
Liz Butcher, from Logan Utah, Created her company Butcher’s Bunches in 2009. Butcher’s Bunches has taken jams to another level, using only the freshest of local ingredients. But instead of using sugar or sugar substitutes in their jams, Butcher’s Bunches use unique and flavorful spices to enhance the flavor of the jams. Butcher’s Bunches personal guarantee is, “if you purchase something you don’t like, return it for a full refund or exchange – your choice!” Butcher’s Bunches products come right out of Logan and Woods Cross, Utah. Most of the produce used in their jams and preservatives are grown right there on location. For the produce they don’t grow themselves, they purchase from local businesses. Monkey Bizzness, Van Gogh Martini and Dirty Diana are just three of the twelve different flavors of jams or preservatives offered by Butcher’s Bunches. The Gluten Free Consumer team liked the different varieties to choose from. It was nice to find whole pieces of crisp fruit in the jams, yet found that the jam was still very spreadable. The packaging had the appeal of homemade jams. Butcher’s Bunches is a proud member of Utah’s Own and their products can be found in stores throughout Utah or online at www.butchersbunches.com. The price of Butcher’s Bunches jams is extremely comparable to other similar products.
Cheese Bread Mania was established in 2011 in Utah. Cheese Bread Mania offer four different authentic “pao de queijo” gluten free Brazilian breads. Their four flavors are original, 4 cheese, sundried tomato and jalapeno. The Cheese Bread Mania uses manioc starch in their products to allow them to be low in sodium and carbs and gluten free. One product offered by Cheese Bread Mania are their cheese balls, these are easy to make products that just need to be tossed into an oven, making for a simple side dish for any meal. The flavor of these cheese balls was intense. The outer texture of the cheese balls had a nice soothing crunch while the inside had the comfort of warm melted cheese. The recipes used for the Cheese Bread Mania products are passed down from four generations and they use only the finest ingredients, even having some of the ingredients flown in from Brazil. Cheese Bread Mania products can be found in grocery stores throughout Utah or can be ordered online at email@example.com. Their boxes are sold in 24 dough units that are “ready to bake.”
My first experience with Eleanor’s was on their first year celebration. The atmosphere was intoxicating. The sweet smell of baking cakes and other sweets filled the air. The staff is friendly and willing to help. What is amazing is the staff comes from one family. They all have Celiac Disease. They blame it on their name sake Eleanor. You will feel one with the family, when you enter their shop. Eleanor’s does have a wedding and birthday cake preorders. Their staff is skilled at creating beautiful gluten free arrangements. They have examples of their artwork displayed in their store. In addition they have sweets that are baked daily. They have cupcakes and sweet cinnamon rolls that will fill your need for a sugar high. I was introduced to the dish called Arepas. It is bread made of sweet corn Maize. It is grilled and filled with wonderful savory meats. I chose the Brisket Arepa. It was savory and filled with peppers that brought a well balance party to my mouth. The Honey Mustard sauce was sweet and balanced. You can find more information on Eleanor’s bakeshop at http://www.eleanorsbakeshop.com/ . Their address is 9495 South 560 West Building D Sandy, UT 84070
