Have you heard? Betsey Johnson filed bankruptcy. So what is next for the fun-filled, free-spirited, 69 year old, party-girl-dressmaker that everyone loves to love?
Betsey Johnson is represented in its Chapter 11 case by Goulston & Storrs, P.C. and Togut, Segal & Segal, as counsel, and Richter Consulting, Inc., as financial advisor.
According to USA Today, all 63 of her stand-alone stores will close, which will force about 350 staffers out of work. Johnson will stay on as the Betsey Johnson brand lower priced line’s creative director. The lower priced line has been, and will continue to be, available at Macy’s and other retailers.
All Betsey Johnson stores will honor gift cards until June 1. All sales made on or after Friday, May 11, 2012 are final. Going-out-of-business sales are taking place at all 54 U.S. Betsey Johnson stores and at all nine Betsey Johnson outlets.

Betsey Johnson launched her namesake label in 1978. The Betsey Johnson product line aesthetic is an infusion of the designer’s personality: frilly yet fantastic, all mixed in together … frinatic! Is that a word? Add a lot of pink, polka dots, animal print, glitter and gold with a splash of black to tame it all in comfortable, ready-to-wear goes straight to evening wear, with a price point that’ll make you fall of a chair, and you’ve got Betsey Johnson! Gotta love her!
So, what’s next?
There is no time for too many tears over the close of the stores and bankruptcy filings.
In February 2012, facing the impeding filings, which actually took place in late April 2012, Johnson was blazing trails through the fashion circuits to promote the Betsey Johnson Fall 2012 Collection. Both the Spring/Summer 2012 and the Fall 2012 collection showcases featured the same spirit of Betsey Johnson, the brand and the person, but with a lot less frill and fabric! Several of the Spring/Summer 2012 pieces were lingerie-esque. Both collections had beautiful pieces. And, yes, the Betsey Johnson Fall 2012 showcase ended with Johnson’s signature cartwheel and splits!
Johnson is forging straight ahead into a Style Network show with daughter Lulu, which is scheduled to premiere later this year.
