Advances in technology have swarmed the teen celebrity scene in an overwhelming way. Being more connected than ever is a great way to keep up with fans on a more personal level, but when you are dealing with tens of millions of followers, it might become a little overwhelming to say the least. However, teen celebrities seem to have a handle on using technology to their advantage. Whether it be fighting off rumors via Twitter, or advertising their latest movie on Facebook, young fans love that they can be in “close” contact with their favorite stars. The marketing aspect of our over-sharing nature speaks for itself. The development of social networking has changed the way we discover and promote stars. Fans used to rely on newsletters, print advertising, and billboards to find out what their favorite celebrities were doing, now all fans have to do is log onto a social networking site.
Last summer in Los Angeles, the LAPD asked celebrities to tweet about the closure of the 405 freeway, since watching the news seems to be so 2008.
Instagram is another source that has brought us further into the lives of our favorite celebrities, where stars like Joe Jonas, love to post pictures and share with followers the sights of their own day to day lives. These technological advances can also get some stars in trouble, like when Justin Bieber accidentally tweeted that he was landing in London, and was then swarmed at the airport, causing security problems.
Miley Cyrus caused quite a stir a few years ago when she outright deleted her Twitter account. It was the topic of discussion for months on end with the media, coming up in every interview Miley did. Cyrus cited wanting to be connected to the outside world, not a computer screen as reasons for deleting. The star returned to Twitter last spring, surprising fans and the media alike.
Accessing all this technology is easier than ever with the smartphone, since celebrities and fans alike are connected anytime anywhere. Although celebrities often complain of not having enough privacy, they don’t seem to mind sharing some of their personal lives with fans, giving them at the same time an easier way than ever to market themselves and their products.
