At least once a year a person needs to re evaluate their life. There is no better way to do that then standing on a ledge of a 300 ft. platform spanning a canyon 160 ft (50 metres) deep, the roaring Cheakamus River snaking through the canyon floor and willing yourself, against your natural instinct, to step off the ledge for a massive freefall. This act of total disregard of instinctual preservation is lulled into submission by a backdrop of old growth forest, canyon walls made up of steep basalt columns, and a stunning coastal mountain range view featuring the Black Tusk Peak in the background. You can decide to plummet to the ground by yourself, or in tandem, your partner a best-friend, or loved one, or in a wheel chair if you wish. You will come away from this shocking experience with a renowned sense of triumph and deeper perspective on life. YES, you did face Fear and Death head on, lived to tell the story, wear the T-shirt and post the photos on your profile.
As terrifying and death deifying as that may sound, it’s time for a reality check. The reality being that Whistler Bungee has been in operation for ten years now, having over 100 000 jumps with a perfect safety record. So, to put the whole jump into perspective, you are much safer jumping off the bridge than you would be walking up to the bridge on your own accord.
You can also choose how you want to jump, either by being harnessed by your chest and waist or with a traditional harness, at your ankles. The difference being is that when you finish your jump, you can hang comfortably from your torso rather than dangling by your feet. Yet many people choose the latter as their preferred style of jumping.
Whistler Bungee, located just 15 min south of Whistler Village and only an hour drive from West Vancouver, is easily accessed just off the Sea to Sky Highway. It is open every day, all year round, and in any weather condition. They will shuttle you, free of charge from Whistler village, or you can drive there. Their hours and pricing are listed here, and included in the jump is a T-shirt that you claim after you have jumped. For a minimal charge you can also get a DVD of your jump recorded by their professional photographer. I would recommend buying the DVD, as you can relive this “once in a life-time” experience over and over again when you post them on facebook, or send them to friends and family.
However, Whistler Bungee isn’t ever just a “once in a lifetime” experience. After your first jump, you automatically become a member, entitled to repeated jumps at a discounted rate.
Whistler Bungee is very conscious about having a minimal impact on the environment that hosts their stunning attraction. Solar and wind energy runs all their equipment, including computers, cameras and winch.
Make sure you book your appointment with Whistler Bungee to “jump start” your summer. For a better idea of what is in store for you at Whistler Bungee, make sure you check out the slide show.
