Remember about nine years ago when Washington was all aflutter over the alleged “outing” of alleged covert CIA agent Valerie Plame? It was alleged by the media and Democrats that Plame was outed by the Bush Administration as political payback because her husband, Joe Wilson, said the administration ginned up the evidence that Saddam Hussein and Iraq were after weapons of mass destruction. So the media went nuts, and Democrats jumped up and down and screamed that a special prosecutor was needed to investigate this act of high crimes and misdemeanors. We were told that Plame’s life was now in danger because she was a covert CIA agent who was exposed to those looking to do this CIA agent harm.
U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald was appointed by then-Attorney General John Ashcroft to investigate the outing. Even though Fitzgerald investigated the case for about a year or so, the truth is he knew the leaker was Richard Armitage, who worked under then-Secretary of State Colin Powell and was a critic of the administration he worked for, within the first few days of the investigation. Yet, he investigated for more than a year anyway. He got Vice President Dick Cheney Chief of Staff Scooter Libby in an apparent lie and nailed him on obstruction of justice charges.
Anyway, here we are in 2012 and we have another leak scandal developing. But the media isn’t all that interested. Whereas the Plame Leak Scandal never compromised U.S. intelligence and Plame’s life was never in any danger, this time around the leaks apparently emanating from the Obama Administration and the White House, in particular, have compromised U.S. national security and endangered U.S. intelligence informants. Whereas the New York Times had more than 500 articles on the Plame outing, in this case the NY Times has played a big role in revealing these leaks.
These are the leaks that have taken place:
• A Pakistani doctor helped U.S. intelligence find Osama bin Laden.
• We had a double agent inside Yemen‘s Al Qaeda branch that helped prevent another airplane bombing.
• The U.S. and Israel jointly used a cyber attack to damage Iran’s nuclear development.
• President Obama gets a “kill list” of terrorists that enables him to decide who is going to get blasted by one of our drones.
Have you heard of Dr. Shakeel Afridi? Chances are, you have not. He is the Pakistani doctor that helped U.S. intelligence nab Obama bin Laden, a triumph Obama and his minions never pass up a chance to tout. Dr. Afridi is now serving a 33-year prison sentence in Pakistan for assisting the U.S. in getting bin Laden. He was found guilty of being a traitor to Pakistan and for colluding with a foreign government (the CIA). Pakistan never would have known Dr. Afridi assisted the U.S. if it were not for “high-ranking White House officials” that said so.
Jamil Afridi, the brother of Shakeel Afridi said, “The blame has been placed on my brother because of America.” An informant helps us get the world’s most wanted man, the world’s worst terrorist and what does he get as a thank you from the Obama administration? A 33-year prison sentence thank you card.
So, while Dr. Afridi languishes in a Pakistani prison (and probably regularly beaten and tortured by Pakistani prison guards as well as those in the prison), the covert CIA agent Valerie Plame did a photo shoot for Vanity Fair magazine with a wonderful article about her and Joe with lots and lots of beautiful pictures.
On May 9, the Associated Press reported that the U.S. had an informant who infiltrated Al Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula, which led to the prevention of another underwear airplane bomber. Again, a “high-ranking official from the Obama White House” was cited as a source for the news. That informant is now in hiding and no longer of assistance to our national security efforts. Meanwhile, the covert CIA agent Valerie Plame and her husband Joe Wilson are on the Washington elite cocktail circuit, rubbing elbows with the rich and famous.
Then, on June 1, The New York Times ran a story revealing an alleged U.S. covert action program called Olympic Games, designed to thwart Iran’s nuclear program with computer virus attacks utilizing first the Stuxnet computer worm and later the Duqu malware. Thanks to the Times article, which cited U.S. government sources, details of the previously unknown operations are now public, including how the programs were supposed to operate and the involvement of Israeli intelligence. What is interesting about these “government sources” is that this information came from the White House situation room. That means few people are privy to the information. Furthermore, apparently these viruses can only occur if someone is there personally downloading the infection. That means we had a covert agent in Iran doing the work. That person’s life might now be endangered.
Meanwhile, covert CIA agent Valerie Flame gets a Hollywood movie made about her “outing” by that evil Bush administration, and, of course, she and her husband rub elbows with Hollywood’s rich and famous.
Finally, the fact that there is a “kill list” is really nothing more than Obama trying to show off how tough he is. In other words, to make him better in the eyes of the electorate.
The uproar over all these leaks extends beyond the Republican Party and conservative journalists. Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said this about the leaks: “The accelerating pace of such disclosures, the sensitivity of the matters in question, and the harm caused to our national security interests is alarming and unacceptable.”
The four Congressional leaders who lead the Senate and House intelligence committees said this in a joint bipartisan statement: “These disclosures have seriously interfered with ongoing intelligence programs and have put at jeopardy our intelligence capability to act in the future. Each disclosure puts American lives at risk, makes it more difficult to recruit assets, strains the trust of our partners, and threatens imminent and irreparable damage to our national security in the face of urgent and rapidly adapting threats worldwide.”
On Sunday, June 17, Independent Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman called for a special prosecutor to investigate these national security leaks. Incompetent Attorney General Eric Holder has named two Justice Department officials to investigate the leaks. However, one of them – U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen Jr. – donated to the Obama 2008 presidential campaign. He also was part of the team that vetted vice presidential candidates for the Obama presidential team and previously got a job with the help of Eric Holder. Can you imagine the uproar in the mainstream media if the Bush administration appointed someone to investigate a growing scandal that donated to the Bush campaign and worked in the vice presidential vetting process? Can you imagine the uproar in the mainstream media if these occurred during a Republican administration?
So, with these leaks from the Obama White House, one man is in prison, another man is in hiding, and Iran and others know how we planted a cyber attack. Meanwhile, covert CIA agent Valerie Plame lives the life of luxury, hobnobbing with the rich and famous, and laughing all the way to the bank. And the media is disinterested.
