Elyria, OH – Monday set a record as the hottest Memorial Day in Cleveland. On that day, a woman left her dog alone in her minivan while she shopped at Walmart.
It was 91 degrees and the van was not running. The dog’s only relief was a partially cracked window.
Darlene Jacovetti, 57, was arrested for cruelty to animals after Elyria police responded to a call at approximately 12:30, where a dog was reportedly in a car for over 20 minutes.
According to an officer, the dog, said to be a black lab, had no water and was clearly in distress and panting heavily.
When Jacovetti got back to her car, she told police she’d only been gone for 15 minutes and that the dog has anxiety issues.
She was released on a court summons.
Please remember to keep your pets indoors on hot days, and especially never leave them in a hot car! Within just a couple of minutes, your car becomes like an oven and your pets are at severe risk of heat stroke or death.
If you see a pet in a hot car, do not delay – call police immediately. It could be the difference between life and death for that animal.
