Two men were arraigned on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 in connection with a vicious attack on Michigan woman named Latonya Bowman, who gave birth days after being abducted. Police say she was kidnapped, set on fire, and then shot in the back. The baby boy was had by emergency C-section three weeks prior to his due date and is said to be doing fine.
One of the suspects is Bowman’s former boyfriend and father of the baby. His motive in the entire attack was that he allegedly did not want to become a parent.
“There is not a scintilla of any mitigating events in this case,” Warren Police Deputy Commissioner Louis Galasso said. “It is nothing more than a disturbing, diabolic scheme put together by two individuals.”
Per CNN, Bowman and the baby were hospitalized on Tuesday afternoon in an undisclosed location. The 22-year-old woman is said to be in stable condition while the baby boy is in the intensive care unit.
“The burns were significant and resulted in a lot of blistering. They are all over her arms, chest and back,” the commissioner said.
Jamal Rashard Rogers, Bowman’s ex-boyfriend, and his roommate, Antonio Valentine Mathis (both 22-years-old) have been charged by police. The men have entered pleas of “not guilty” to charges including assault with intent to murder, conspiracy to commit homicide, and unlawful imprisonment.
Mathis also faces a weapons charge as he was caught on videotape earlier in the day at Home Depot buying gloves, tape, and rope.
Rogers, who is expecting a child with another woman, told Bowman he wanted to reconcile their differences on Saturday, May 26, 2012. She drove to his home and they went to a movie together. Upon arriving back at Rogers home, Bowman pulled into the garage where it all started to go wrong for her.
A gunman then taped her mouth and eyes shut and bound her hands. Police believe the gunman to be Mathis. The two men then put Bowman in a car headed toward Detroit when one told her, “You know why I am doing this.”
After stopping the vehicle, Bowman was sprayed with lighter fluid and set on fire. She rolled out of the vehicle trying to put on the flames, and she then heard two gunshots. One hit her in her upper back and then she played dead so the men would leave.
“She has demonstrated her courage, and I suspect she will fully recover,” Galasso said.
She drove to a service station to call her mother, got taken to a hospital, and went into labor early on Tuesday morning.
Saturday appears to have been a day for horrific and strange crimes as at the same time, Rudy Eugene was shot dead by police in Miami for chewing on a man’s face.
