We’ve all had those nights where we wake up the next morning and it’s all we can think about. It puts a smile on our face, and we wished it could have lasted just a little longer… Xtasy Mas Band Launch was one of those nights.
From the moment you entered through the double doors you could feel the energy which lasted until the lights came on at 4am. The music was on point. The drinks were flowing. Anticipation of the live performers was apparent. The smell of delicious Caribbean cuisine wafted through the air. Vibes were cool but exciting. And then…EROTICA!
When the three sections of Xtasy Mas Band glided onto the stage you were first struck with Pleasure – a costume of jeweled yellows which conjured pleasurable images, whether you were giving or receiving. Second was Risque – with splashes of turquoise and silver amongst green feathers and embellished chain link, awakening that part of you that sometimes feels so good when being bad. And last up Ecstasy – which burst forth in colors of rich pinks, blues and silvers. And adding to the mystery, a masked headpiece exciting the body and soul producing through artistry and imagination a vivid impression of reality and feelings of bliss.
A successful launch, and a surprising scene stealer. Xtasy Mas Band did not disappoint.
This new band to the Miami Broward One Carnival arena was formed in 2011 by Kurt “DJ Redz” Williams, Stacy Williams and Shawn Callender. Andy Alexander joined the band in 2012. They wanted a band name that was descriptive of their own carnival experiences and also, what they would want their masqueraders to feel while playing mas with them, and what better word to describe the pure elation of playing mas? Xtasy!
The 2012 concept was born in October 2011. Xtasy Mas wanted a sexy and exciting theme, and nothing encompasses sexy and exciting more than the word EROTICA!
Their logo, quite interesting, incorporates the butterfly. A gentle, mysterious yet excitable insect which is the perfect description of what a costumed masquerader looks like on Carnival day. The logo is also a tribute to Stacy’s aunt (Anne Campbell) as well as her mother (Denise Fredrick), who was pregnant with her while playing mas in San Fernando in 1976. Their costumes were butterflies.
Come October 2012, Miami Broward One Carnival will take to the streets of South Florida and Xtasy Mas Band will be among the top contenders. They intend to provide their masqueraders with 100% authentic Trinidadian mas, designed and made by Ronnie and Caro of Trinidad Carnival. They will have some of the top deejays from South Florida including bandleader Kurt ‘DJ Redz’ Williams, providing the best music to jump up on the road. Their all-inclusive band has one of the top rated caterers in the Ft. Lauderdale area, Mom’s Caribbean Kitchen, providing a continental breakfast to get the masqueraders started and a delicious hot lunch to keep them going. Their bar will be fully stocked with beverages and top-shelf liquor. Their staff and security team will be working together to keep their masqueraders happy and safe.
The true spirit of this band is their positivity and their ability to take hold of a situation, resolve it and move on. They are proud representatives of their culture and although they understand that there is a monetary satisfaction associated with having a mas band, for them, it is “truly a labor of love” for carnival.
Stacy Williams shared this advice: “1) Always keep God in your heart and thoughts. As long as you have God with you, anything is possible. 2) The most important goal should be to provide a joyous carnival experience to the masqueraders. Their satisfaction with the product your band provides will keep them returning year after year. Remember the things that made your best carnival experience and try to provide those things as well as more. 3) Plan ahead and try to prepare as many things as possible in advance.”
